21 May Mens Health and Aging
There are various ways to improve mens health while also improving the quality of life.
Aging is a natural part of the life cycle however, it’s important to consider men’s specific health needs and concerns. There seems to be a trend among men to visit the doctor less and not pay attention to health changes or communicate when health changes occur. Men can experience health issues more often as they age, but they may feel discomfort in sharing these issues. Paying attention to your health is vital to living a happy and long life. There may be many reasons men are not feeling their best and therefore may need some tips on how to stay healthy.
Get Good Sleep
Adults need between 7-9 hours of sleep. Insufficient sleep is associated with a number of chronic diseases and conditions, such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity, and depression. Also, poor sleep is responsible for motor vehicle and machinery-related accidents.
Know Your Numbers
Keep track of your numbers for blood pressure, blood glucose, cholesterol, body mass index (BMI), or any others you may have. If your numbers are high or low, your doctor or nurse can explain what they mean and suggest how you can get them to a healthier range. Be sure to ask him or her what tests you need and how often you need them.
Look at Your Diet
A diet that consists of fatty and unhealthy foods, like fried foods and excessive sugar, is more likely to lead to issues like high blood pressure, heart disease, and higher cholesterol. Foods to consider adding to your diet should be taken from a balanced look at the food pyramid. Choosing lean meats, adding fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and trading out saturated fats should improve your diet substantially. Changing your diet also leads to increased energy and performance.
Watch Your Alcohol Consumption
Alcohol can be another factor leading to health issues in men. Alcohol can cause heart issues like irregular heartbeat, stroke, and high blood pressure. Alcohol can also affect other areas of the body like the liver and pancreas, leading to inflammation issues and creations of possible diseases. Alcohol also can throw off your hormone system in your body, leading to decreased testosterone and the issues that come with it.
Move More
Adults need at least 2½ hours of moderate-intensity aerobic activity every week, and muscle-strengthening activities that work all major muscle groups (legs, hips, back, abdomen, chest, shoulders, and arms) on two or more days a week. You don’t have to do it all at once. Spread your activity out during the week and break it into smaller amounts of time during the day.
